Music Classes
Music classes with the Connecticut Experiential Learning Center meet Tuesdays in Guilford from 11:00-11:45 a.m. for students aged 9-14. Explore the science of sound through music. Learn about instruments from percussion to woodwinds that then you will play. Build your own beach bottle banjos, flutes, drums and more. Learn to play music in a group through drumming, singing, and movement using instruments from around the world.
Science Classes
Science classes with the Connecticut Experiential Learning Center meet on Mondays and Wednesdays in Guilford from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Join a small group of young scientists as we explore the natural world in a scientific way. Hands-on approach to learning. Focus on using observation skills, making predictions, developing hypothesis, and designing experiments to test ideas. Earth, life, chemical, physical and environmental sciences are all included in our curriculum. Topics include Bubbleology, ecosystems and habitats, anthropology/archaeology, inventions, simple machines, and lots more.
Writers’ Workshop
Writers’ Workshop with the Connecticut Experiential Learning Center meets in Guilford Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:15 – 3:00 p.m. for students aged 9-14. Through mini-lessons, writing time, and sharing aloud, students will explore writing from the heart, while learning both the significance and way of incorporating a variety of aspects of writing, such as setting; character development; plot versus theme; show versus tell; writing a good lead; using dialogue and more.
Why Cook?
Why Cook? with the Connecticut Experiential Learning Center meets in Branford Fridays from 8:30 – 10:00 a.m. for students aged 9 -14. Maria has a way of incorporating the chemistry, math, aerobics, and great fun of cooking. Students learn the finer points of creating culinary masterpieces – whether it is an appetizer, dessert, entree or side dish, students build valuable skills that provide them with the knowledge to be able to confidently navigate a recipe or invent a way to create a meal in any kitchen!
Outdoor Education
Program includes work with Two Coyotes Wilderness School in Ansonia, CT; Yoga at Watering Pond Studio in Guilford, CT; Mount Southington Ski Area in Southington, CT; local area hiking, orienteering, as well as sports and games both outdoors and indoors at the Branford Community House gymnasium.
Art
A variety of media will be explored with special focus on the theme of ancient civilizations and art history from many areas of the world. Aspects of drawing, including perspective, tone, and color blending, combined with free exploration of student’s ideas and investigation into structures of past civilizations from around the world are all incorporated into this rich and exciting art experience.
