It is basic human behavior, i.e. behavior 101. How we treat each other matters. When we begin a school year at CT Experiential Learning Center, we create a hand circle. Placing each person’s hands on a large piece of paper, forming a circle, and then trace each of our hands. Students consider how we want to be together and write words on the inside of the circle that represent the ways we agree to treat one another, how we would each want to be treated, to be best able to learn and grow. To form the most perfect union, within what we call a “caring learning” community.
Words on the inside from year to year are often similar, such as: be kind, show respect, make “I statements”; be a good listener; cooperate; share; give appreciations and put-ups. Learning together means feeling safe enough to be ourselves and to make mistakes, as this is an important art of learning.
On the outside of the circle go the word that represent what we do not want. These include: no hitting; unkind words and actions; put downs.
Generally, it is more difficult and rarer for people, even within a family, to consciously share an appreciation, but it is essential.
Give a “put up” today. Bring something forth that allows the love to shine and that shows care to another.
There is more to do to bring a better version of how we treat one another.
Circle up, everyone.
