The most powerful learning happens when life is the classroom.
This August, CT Experiential Learning Center is partnering with Different Drum Sailing Adventures and Wanderlust Mentor to offer a live-aboard sailing voyage on Casco Bay along the Maine Coast aboard Boundless, a 46-foot ketch. Middle and high school students will eat, sleep, navigate, and sail together, learning what it means to truly show up for a crew and for themselves.
This is not a vacation. It is a turning point.
Like everything we do at CELC, this adventure begins before it begins. Pre- and post-trip learning sessions are part of the experience, because reflection is just as important as the voyage itself.
For many young people this voyage becomes the moment they look back on and say that is when something changed for me. That is when I found out what I was capable of. It is the kind of experience that doesn’t just look good on a resume. It lives inside you.
Students come away having done something real. They have navigated by the stars, read the wind, cooked for their crew, made decisions that mattered, and worked through moments that were hard and uncomfortable and worth every second.
They come away knowing they can handle something difficult. They come away having lived closely with people they may not have known before. Learning to listen, to contribute, to disagree respectfully, and to take care of one another in a small space on open water. Those are not just sailing skills. Those are life skills. The kind that show up again and again in classrooms, in relationships, in careers, and in the moments that define who we are becoming.
That is what we are here for.
